im not a really guitar player, but here i go make sure your guitar is comfortable for you, a sufficient size for you etc once you get calluses it will be easier to press the strings down just keep tearing up ur fingers and u will get calluses, these come in time use the tips of your fingers and make sure they're curved when u put them on the string

^I'm a guitar player, and he is exactly right. Also, fight through the pain. Curve your fingers, press down the strings, and strum the chords. It will get easier the more you do it. It will hurt for a while, but once you get callouses, it won't.

One more tip, practicing and learning stuff like chords and scales is probably going to be boring for a while. Trust me, learning scales is extremely important. Chords are as well. Practice through the boredom of learning about different modes. It will serve you well later on when you start writing riffs and solos.

Learn power chords, they're pretty easy and can lead you on to playing many songs.

1. Don't practice, cool clothes, make up and nice guitars make you better 2. Everything is better with gain at 10 3. Don't Listen to music, you'll just sound like what you listen to 4. Take out the locking nut on your guitar! That way u can tune whenever! 5. You'll learn more easily & better if you have a $1000+ guitar!! 6. Use a belt sander to redress your frets weekly 7. Butter makes a great string conditioner 8. To get awesome Ph4t tone, make sure to punch a hole in your speaker cones 9. Rusty strings sound nicer than new shiny ones 10. Make sure all of the hardware on your guitar is only finger tight, it makes for a killer sound! 11. Leave the standby switch ON all the time... UR T00bz make a really cool sound when you hit power... 12. Whammy without a whammy bar. 13. Mids aren't important at all. Just take them away. 14. You can use any amp in the world, no matte rthe cost, as long as you have a good guitar you'l sound AWESOME! 15. Only big brands are worth buying. 16. All that matters are power chords. 17. The only pedal you'll ever need is a Boss Metal Zone.

I agree with PaleFolklore, but also try methods like googling for tips from famous guitar players. Trust me it helps.

Also, anyone who says that learning scales is not important is kinda dumb. I'm looking at you, Yado.
