It's not really strictly about my personal life but I've been wondering recently and don't really want to tell my parents or else it's going to be anger on steroids:
Why apply to the University of Texas (and, to a lesser extent, Texas A&M) when I know already that my chances of getting in are <5%? |

I mean some of my friends think I can get at least get into Texas A&M with my current grades (3.4 GPA, top 31% of my class, 1350 [new] SAT) and that since I'm a good writer, I can cook up some good essays
I just don't know, I've been more of a realist/pessimist most of my life than optimist |

Because they can either say yes or no. In the end you got into a great school (iowa state) and you might as well try.
I know i'm a sophmore but this irks me when students say "I probably won't even get in" Just try because you never know what the colleges are looking for |

Because it's a valid claim. There are SOOOOOOOOOOOO many students in the state of Texas and that's why they had to do this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_House_Bill_588
HB 588 is lowkey one of Texas's most controversial laws, right up there with others such as open carry. My dad knows two professors at UT and my mom is a TA at UT right now while she's in the PhD program. They all witness it with their eyes. Students that are in the top 7-8% of their schools from small towns don't make it at UT and they're eventually weeded out or are forced to drop out on their own. Instead of being flexible and accepting students from the top 25-33% of their high school classes that have graduated from schools that do more than enough to prepare for college readiness, they're bound by this law to accept the top 7% (Texas) or top 10% (Texas A&M) and then everyone else in-state is virtually waitlisted for at least some time |

So what? You will end up regretting not applying and if they don't take you, oh well the institution missed out on a great student. |

I just kinda want to get a quality education at a low price, y'know, my dad's going to hate paying for out-of-state tuition because I'm honestly sure he'd rather me go to Arizona or Iowa State rather than Texas Tech |
