"I'm assuming it wouldn't be an earthquake, but a substantial meteor that would do the deed?" A tsunami would probably be the least of my worries. If it were to be 1000 kilometers, most of the United States would remain. Coastal states could be left pretty devastated and Hawaii would be in shambles, but a 1000 kilometer tsunami wouldn't go as far inland as one might think. If it were a meteor or asteroid that caused it, then I've got another kind of wave to worry about. Depending on how close I am, I may or may not be within the pressure wave range, which wouldn't be too divergent from the pressure wave of a nuclear bomb.
