The internet requires staff. It doesn't just maintain itself. Power housing which is thelst effective way requires staff. And beside, wildmills and river stations aren't going to be strong enough to power all of New York City.

There would be nobody to provide oil for electricity, resulting in permanent blackout. Buildings would start decomposing naturally. Nobody would be there to maintain sewers, resulting in leaks. There would be no firefighters, and huge fires would spread.
