I have been an active member of ROBLOX since 2010, and I have seen the site grow a lot and really show a lot of progress, but it has come to my attention recently about something that has been a problem for a lot of people.
Recently, I've noticed ROBLOX censoring almost every message I send. At first I was a bit okay with it, but it happens more and more frequently. It's at the point where it's absurd because I can't have a conversation with a friend because ROBLOX flips out and censors every word that's "mature" and appropriate for the site. Message after message I send, ends up as a bunch of hashtag crap. And the other day, I found an old friend who I hadn't seen in a while, and messaged him about how he's been and all that jazz. While writing it I noticed that I always made sure EVERY word has correct spelling and proper grammar and that there are no other mistakes in my message. I feel like I'm writing an essay for my AP English class. I mean, this game is designed for children, but lots of those children can't spell correctly!
This is the kind of stuff that is actually demotivating developers and teenagers because some games they are making or playing relies on communication. If you can't normally talk on a game or send a message to a friend, this limits games such as role playing games, FPS games, group communications, or just a chat with friends. Also, group activities are a huge mess too because admin commands are censored, because of reasons like having the word "Kill" censored (WAT??? Kill is censored? Literally every game ever on roblox is about killing stuff...)
On a more serious note, what if you speak a different language? There are some people who don't live in the US or UK, and some of those people don't even speak English. There are other communities on ROBLOX who could actually learn a lot from this site! I even saw there was a dutch site of ROBLOX too, but I can't imagine their struggles. And when if they're learning to communicate in English through this game? They can't talk to their tutor or whoever because every single word they type will be turned into those lovely hashtags, which becomes annoying.
ROBLOX is just so frantic and is overreacting about keeping children unexposed to what is really going on in the real world. I know they want to keep this a safe environment, but seeing useless words being censored gives children bad correlations with the word. Like if you say the word "tree", it's blocked out because it is totally related to a plant that is of the smoking kind. You can't say the word "firetruck", which is every 5 year old's dream job. "Oh dad, I want to be a fireman!", "No son, you can't because ROBLOX thinks firetrucks lead to very dangerous behavior in children. They call it fireman syndrome!" It's just really becoming frustrating that they're censoring normal words, which if you think about it, is because they have too many bots filtering these kinds of things. I see no positive in banning these words. The word "Minecraft" is also banned. It may seem reasonable, but the companies have no competetion between each other, the games are totally different and uncomparable. Coincidentally, not long ago I actually got a warning from ROBLOX for uploading a creeper from Minecraft model several years beforehand. I still look forward to continue having a great experience every day on ROBLOX, but this has been a problem for far too long, and cumulatively becomes worse. I know it's not as simple as it's said, but it would be very meaningful if the censoring of unnecessary words could stop and a different system could be created which can allow a conversation to happen freely, without having to check frequently if your message was sent right. Of course there are some obvious words that need to be censored, but I can speak for the community when I say we're just annoyed by the unnecessary censoring and hashtag spamming.
