You'll want to go for Mac, all the way. Pro-Tools is industry standard for software, but I'm personally in preference of Logic Pro simply because it comes with more and better native plug-ins and I do a lot of MIDI work. As far as microphones, you can't go wrong with your standards: SMB7s, 57s, 421s, K2s, RE20s, etc. Personal favorites also include Earthworks condensers and TLM103s (which I used for EVERYTHING when I had access to them). If you're looking for cheaper microphones, though, AT2020s have a nice sound and basically double as a hammer. Cables, you can buy any. Boards and interfaces, I can't recommend you anything because I don't know whether you want a large digital board or a small interface. It depends on how many tracks you'd want to be recording at a time in a home studio environment. But those digital boards get expensive, so I recommend starting with a USB interface to get a feel for your software (I use a MobilePre). Hope this helps.

or get a pc like a normal person but then buy reaper software (its probably not the best purchase for whatever you're doing but its got a cool name and its cool)
