ROBLOX has had spam comments, bot comments, ad comments, and overall fake comments for years, and the problem has just gotten worse. But instead of facing it, ROBLOX has opted to remove comments as a whole in general. Many have tried to suggest the magic fix, the permanent patch, Trump's almighty firewall against internet trash commentators, but I'm here to tell you that it doesn't exist. Just like exploits, hacks, ODers, and trolls, the problem with comments isn't something that can be fixed permanently; it's a never-ending war, and it needs to be treated that way if we're ever gonna get anywhere. And the best way to win a war (besides ROBLOX's self-destructive solution of destroying the battleground) is to arm yourself with the right tools, the right system, to win on every front. I'm here to suggest those tools, that system, that will save ROBLOX's comment system: trails! ----------------------- Comment trails are simply player-subjective and player-moderated comment sections; with its implementation players would be able to do the following to comment sections: -- Scrubbing: Hide comments of their choosing from view. -- Flag: Put a literal flag on a comment or commentator as spam, troll, bot, ad, helpful, great, good, bad, etc. -- Blacklist: Add words, phrases, usernames, etc to the filter to be auto-scrubbed or flagged. -- Decorate (OPTIONAL): Add flagging animations, and scrubbing animations like maybe a sword slash cutting a scrubbed comment to ribbons or a giant stamp on a flagged comment making it impossible to read, etc. When they do these things they would be creating their own comment trail for their specific account, as in when it's first made only you can see it. But basically you would be able to publish it to that specific comment section for all people to set as their default trail for the comment section. The selection list would show the top ranked comment trails and work like this: At the top would be the creator's comment trail, at the bottom would be your own, and below in would be the option for no comment trail, viewing that comment section unaltered. In between your comment trail and the creator's would be the creator's configured top ranked, the Top 3 of the Day, the Top 5 of the Week, the Top # of the Month, Year, All Time, etc and they would be ranked by the amount of people who have it set as their comment trail. Once multiple people use the same comment trail, they can edit it or flag the comment trail themselves as good or bad. Good flags cancel out bad ones, and if the amount of bad flags is higher than the amount of people who've set it as their default it will be removed from the rankings (possibly to flag a comment trail could require a reCAPTCHA). If your selection falls off the selection list, it isn't removed, it's just you can't select it anymore. ----------------------- With this trail system, the comment sections can return, but in a way that leaves it up to its communities to decide what it will become; a place where troll comments are nurtured or a place where the truely good comments are protected and the bad ones rejected, without actually doing any permanent damage. It's all on us. And maybe even group wall trails and forum thread trails can help the trolling and botting issue on all fronts. So support, no support, give me your thoughts: are you ready to send these bots, trolls and spammers on the trail to oblivion? TL;DR Players can create their own comment trails for comment sections (and possibly group walls and forum threads), their own self-moderations that only they can see. And then publish them for others to use and edit to its trail leaderboard where the ones with the most users get to stay on the selection list.

ROBLOX still hasn't removed comments on images, decals, gamepasses, etc. #code if R+ is cool then game.Players.Sufganiyot:BreakJoints()

@Sufa Cool. But a little off topic.

Support. This could work. My only wish is that you make it so that you always start out with the comment section unaltered and to see our selected comment trail you click a "trail" button to trail a comment section. Just to make it harder for the comment sections to feel like a complete warzone.

^ Depends on how it's done. If it's like unlocking better animations then maybe. But if it's paying every time you want to use an animation or a certain animation then nah. But either way is that something worth paying for, or charging for?

Well if there's gonna be a huge market of animations that you expect ROBLOX to make, they'd have to be monetized to incentize their development. But if it's just a few basic ones I guess not.

Animations I feel aren't necessary, but if you want decor maybe there could be different flags you could buy or different scrubs.

Yeah you've got a point there. Also I just realized that animations might cause unnecessary lag. Some comment sections have A LOT of comments, and an animation for potentially every one of them? Yikes.

@Jascha It depends on how many are loaded at a time. From my understanding they wouldn't be permanent animations like sprites so if a page only loads like 10 comments at a time it would only be 10 animations running their course at once, which isn't so bad.

Interesting idea. We've thought of comment threads, but it is equally hard to prevent abuse when it's self moderated. For example, a spammer can create a thread and run bots to upvote that thread to the top. However, we are working on a way to give developers a way to get feedback from users.

@superdcats You've got a good point there. Player moderation is just as fallible. However I don't think true self moderation is because players can't complain about their own preference. I think the basis of this thread was understanding that stopping all spam comments is just as impossible as stopping all trolls, ODers, exploiters, etc. Because as long as there's players, there will be trolls, ODers, exploiters, etc. We can't and we don't need to create a fix all solution, but a fluid and adaptable system. I think the best thing that can be done is what this suggestion does; it makes the players themselves accountable by giving them useful power, but arbitrary enough so that it's abusal won't do any real damage. The worst thing I can see out of this is if trolls get their comment trails to the top of a comment section and fill it with unprovoked flags and scrubs, but even so if you have to actively choose to see them in the first place, what damage does it really do? And as long as you can't put custom messages in flags or scrubs it won't really matter. (Well now that I think about it the editing system could use a tweak; maybe you can flag other people's edits to the comment trail if they didn't publish it to begin with just like you can flag comment trails themselves. Also maybe comment trails can be saved to be auto-published, so you don't have to rebuild a good trail from scratch if you want to buff a different comment section)
