I made a thread like this a long time ago, and saw a bunch of others as well. They all died. Rip.
Please look at the list of genres on the Games page as a reference.
Turn the current genre system upside-down. It is and always has been a mess.
If I were to divide the current "genres" into gameplay genres and themes, it would look like this:
Gameplay Genres
Adventure
Building
Fighting
FPS
RPG
Sports
Themes
Comedy
Horror
Medieval
Military
Naval
Sci-fi
Town and City
Western
On our current list of "genres," we seem to have more themes than actual genres.
Themes are fine. We need more genres. This would be my list - which is still incomplete:
All Genres
Action (includes FPS and most Fighting) - such as fighters and shooters, i guess
Adventure (currently RPG) - traditional RPGs, survival, exploration
Arcade - score based games, certain simulators, "tag" or "killer" games
Skill - puzzles, obbies and such
Sandbox (currently Building) - building games, "toy" or "god" games
Sport (currently Sports) - competitive and sport based games
Miscellaneous (currently All) - such as showcases, hangouts, most simulators, tycoons
I'll add to it later.
This idea would just keep everything a bit more organised.
