Look down, use your chin to protect your neck
If fighting dirty, go for their neck.
Don't bother with the limbs, go for the face/head
Keep your hands up boxing style, use them to protect your head
If your opponent uses their legs, try to trip them (kick the shins of their standing leg) while their standing on one leg
Get your opponent into an awkward position if possible
Keep your legs low, even if it does turn into a kicking battle and your hands high
As for punches, go for small punches to distract the opponent, then to finish go for a full on cross, complete with leg motions. You should be in a standard boxing position with one foot in front of the other, as you cross be sure to twist your back foot for momentum.
