A tariff imposed on foreign goods means that the consumers (ie, the Americans) have to pay more money for them. Any money made off of Trump's tariffs will be the money of the American citizenry, not money from Mexico. Here's a video that describes how tariffs work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWFV-bYfm_4

Wow, you really disproved my argument that a policy affecting people of one country can't be racist because it only affects one country. That's like saying a tariff with Germany was racist against white people.

Yeah. It's supposed to damage the Mexican economy as an incentive to pay for the wall directly. It only affects Americans that buy Mexican products as opposed to American products. Mexico gets less trade with America. That hurts Mexico. Mexico wants to stop hurting. Mexico and America strike a deal. I should've also mentioned that a tariff was one of the PROPOSED methods to pay for the wall. That's my fault.

Nothing is stopping Mexico from signing on with China or any South American nations for trade, sir. I don't think the Mexican people would tolerate funding Trump's Wall, even if it stopped the economic hardship. Nationalism is a hell of a #####

Except for the increased costs of transport and new trade deals that need to be made. (Also 81% of all Mexico's exports are to America. It's not easy to find a replacement for 81% of your trade when your #1 trade partner puts a limit on you.)

Mexican citizens revile our administration. What makes you think they wouldn't do the hard work to find new trading partners (I believe they've already begun talks with China and TPP) when the alternative is kowtowing to an administration that has insulted their pride? You're assuming that they'll bend to economic hardship, but my experience with Latin Americans seems to suggest otherwise.

Like I said, the tariff isn't even a final solution so there's really no point in debating this further. We'll just have to wait and see. But really, tariffs won't kill trade. They serve as a kind of sales tax on foreign competition.

#208621527Tuesday, January 31, 2017 5:14 AM GMT

yeah it's true that it's not a definite solution picked, they could easily find another idea and could be putting this one out for opinions because it seems they've been doing it a lot.

There is no way Mexico will pay a dime to the US or even cooperate with the Trump administration on the subject of 'the wall'. So much for the greatest negotiator.

That's because establishing your self as 'anti-trump' is utterly useless at this point in time. He won, and is the president as it stands. Instead. Establish yourself as 'pro-logic' and only be 'anti-' on individual issues which undermine standards of reason.

As pointed out by someone earlier, tariffs on imports from mexico would only hurt the US Consumer. Nearly every single item would raise in price.

#208622629Tuesday, January 31, 2017 5:35 AM GMT

Except that people are less likely to buy the product at a higher price, resulting in the seller losing sales. The seller being foreign in this case. Economics.
