They switched to a format that makes more sense. They reduced it to 32 teams and FINALLY GOT RID OF THE ####ING DUMB "FOUNDING TEAM" QUALIFICATION.
All of the teams are going to qualify via on-ice performance. Only thing that's missing now is KHL participation and that's supposedly coming in the future.
This is where the 2017-18 tournament's teams will be coming from:
5 each from Finland and Sweden
4 each from the Czech Republic and Switzerland
3 each from Germany and the EBEL (Austrian league which has 4 foreign teams)
1 each from Britain, Slovakia, France, Norway, Denmark, Belarus, and Poland
1 from winning the Continental Cup
Sweden already has Frölunda as one of their five representatives for winning the 2016-17 tournament. Britain is also listed as having the Nottingham Panthers as their representative since they won the Continental Cup, but it's unclear whether or not there will be a second British team after the league season there ends. It's even more unclear who's getting the 32nd spot if only Nottingham is allowed to represent Britain, but if we picked the best-placed league in the Continental Cup that's unrepresented in the CHL to begin with it'd go to Kazakhstan. |
