This forum explains how the Legio IV cohort system works.
Each Cohort provides a different set of expertise for the Legion, and they are run by a Centurion. Centurions are to lead a Cohort. Each Cohort has ten men.
The Centuries are designed to help coordinate raids and trainings, they should raid and train together to get used to each other, along with the Cohort as a whole doing this. Each Century has five men in it. Two Centuries create a Cohort.
Each Century chooses a Signifer, and the Signifer of Centuria I is the Signifer of the Cohort. All Legionaries are required to join a Cohort to get out of the militia.
