-make it a yearly event. much higher volume of publicity.
-make it during the all-star break. no other sports on to watch.
-if the all star break is 2 weeks long, you wont have to worry about pitchers burning themselves out in the WBC, because the MLB season will be shortened by about 6 game to make up for this.
-also, baseball fervor is hot in july. there will be a lot more enthusiasm about the sport in general |

The normal All-Star break is 4 days long. This would extend it by about a week, and replace the meaningless All-Star game.
I'd have no problem with 10-12 days without MLB. The NHL does it and Olympic hockey is a success. The WBC would be so much more exciting this way.
And you could make it every 2 years instead of every year |

look at the games in asia in front of empty stadiums. now imagine cuba and japan playing at wrigley field. or israel taking on china at camden yards. much greater publicity, and it would generate revenue for ballparks |

You also have to look at the relations between MLB/NHL and the international governing bodies of their respective sports.
NHL-IIHF relations are very well known to be extremely strained (to the point where the NHL is now attempting to kill the Olympic hockey tournament by watering down an old tournament that actually used to be good with stupid gimmicks and a general disregard for the game outside of the NHL's own markets) and MLB-WBSC doesn't exactly look perfect either when you consider what happened with the WBSC Premier 12.
The Premier 12 was marketed by the WBSC as the flagship international baseball tournament and a vastly improved version of the old "Baseball World Cup", and MLB actually refused to let their players participate in it for some reason despite the tournament being in the middle of November (although MiLB players were allowed). The WBC isn't immune to this kind of stuff too, there have been numerous occasions when Japanese league players have considered not playing. |

nobody is going to play in a yearly tournament because there won't be enough national pride when it happens so often.

i think 4 years is too long. the olympics are every two years, granted theyre 2 different seasons. international soccer has tournaments every year i think??? i know theres stuff in between the world cup |

not to mention the risk of injury in a yearly tournament is too high for them to be willing to risk losing millions playing it yearly, whereas every four years makes it actually a unique experience.
a lot of the all-star level players don't go as is, even fewer will go if it's yearly because then it's not unique.
