“[AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ INTERVIEW, JANUARY 2073] CLARK: So what you’re saying, Ms. Ashcraft, is that travelling… under the universe… is somehow faster? ASHCRAFT: Yes. Think of it like swimming, right? We’re currently floating on top of the universe, so there’s this sort of surface tension slowing us down. CLARK: In that case, how does your new ‘Streamline Drive’ change that? ASHCRAFT: Well, ‘Streamline Drive’ is a mouthful. We just call it a SEAM Drive. The drive creates a rip in our universe - a seam, if you will - so that an object can pass into the space underneath. There’s no surface tension down there, so hypothetically, the object can then accelerate past the speed of light. The drive creates a new seam back to regular space, and the object keeps most of its momentum when it returns. === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The New York Times’, MARCH 2076] ...additional experiments from the European Organization for Nuclear Research have confirmed the hypothesis. Still, Mary Ashcraft, head of the SEAM Drive Project, was hesitant in endorsing the scientific community’s praise. ‘I only ever intended the SEAM Drive to travel outside reality temporarily,’ Ashcraft wrote in a public memo. ‘I focused on faster-than-light travel; never travel between universes. That was done by my team, and they deserve the credit.’ === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ INTERVIEW, APRIL 2076] ASHCRAFT: When they told me that the SEAM Drive was fast enough to break into another universe, I actually laughed at first. Thought it was April Fools’ Day! CLARK: Whose idea was it, then? ASHCRAFT: One of the lead physicists on my team, Takeo Yoshioka. He’s a genius… I think he’s working on a couple experiments with parallel universes right this moment. CLARK: Any in particular you don’t mind sharing? ASHCRAFT: Sure. Today, he should be tracking atoms with something called electromagnetic imaging as we shoot them through the SEAM Drive. We’re trying to confirm that the atoms don’t change, even when they enter other universes. CLARK: Wait, shouldn’t the other universes have different laws of… say, physics? ASHCRAFT: That’s why it’s really weird. Atoms from our universe always follow the laws of our universe, even when they’re in other universes. We think it applies to any object from our reality, but we can’t send anything bigger than an atom right now to test. CLACK: What are you going to call your discovery? ASHCRAFT: ‘The Yoshioka Principle’, or something. I’m making sure he gets the credit this time. === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘BuzzFeed’ VIDEO, SEPTEMBER 2076] ...but if you think the Yoshioka Principle is odd, you’ll be blown away by what we ranked the number one oddest scientific phenomenon: the disappearance of Kepler-82b. Discovered in 2005, the star was found to have disappeared in June of this year... === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘Scientific American’, JANUARY 2077] In only the span of a few years, the idea of parallel universes has become a cultural phenomenon. Vendors sell bumper stickers that joke ‘Warning: SEAM Drive installed’. Multidimensional chick flicks top Hollywood charts. Now, it seems like the next big thing is parse travel - abbreviated from PARallel univerSE travel. In many ways, human parse travel appears just within reach. Objects remain undamaged when sent through the SEAM Drive, as do living things. The drive can now open seams big enough for a colony ship. Locations through the multiverse are consistent, and can be mapped. The SEAM Drive Project even drew a map. So what’s stopping us, then? Mary Ashcraft, head of the SEAM Drive Project, explains that ‘parse travel is a one way trip’. ‘While we can send things to a parallel universe,’ she explains, ‘we don’t know how to bring them back. Once an object crosses through a seam, we can’t keep the seam open. Electromagnetic signals aren’t affected, so in experiments, we can send data back and forth. But physical objects are lost forever.’ In preparation for the future, the SEAM Drive Project is creating a coordinate system for use in parse travel. While currently, the UN Human Rights Council bans all human experimentation with the SEAM Drive… === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ INTERVIEW, JANUARY 2079] CLARK: For those listeners returning, I’m speaking with Gary Lehner, director of the Goddard Space Flight Center. Mr. Lehner, there’s absolutely no chance it’s scientific error? LEHNER: None. The entire Hyades star cluster has disappeared. Every single one of its 400 stars is gone. === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The New York Times’, FEBRUARY 2079] ...that Mary Ashcraft, head of the SEAM Drive Project, was found dead in her house this morning. Investigators have not yet officially commented on her cause of death, but initial reports indicate it was not natural. Ashcraft was not struggling with any pressing health concerns... ===

[EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The Washington Post’, APRIL 2079] As protests erupt, scientists have yet to come up with an explanation for the sudden mass death of global plant life. Likewise, in the United States, the Department of Agriculture has not yet released a statement on why large parts of the country can no longer sustain crops. While hydroponics projects are underway, scientists estimate that current food projections are unsustainable for more than a year… === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ INTERVIEW, MAY 2079] LEHNER: I cannot explain the recent disappearance of the Orion and Ursa Major constellations, nor the continual disappearance of other stars through the last five months. CLARK: Mr. Lehner, is there a possibility that our own Sun could disappear? LEHNER: There’s nothing I can say on that matter. === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘CNN’, JUNE 2079] ...western coast of Europe was hit by a Category Five hurricane, and deaths are estimated at upwards of ten thousand. The hurricane follows a series of unusual weather occurrences, including a March tsunami in South America which killed upwards of 400,000 people… === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ INTERVIEW, JULY 2079] CLARK: And you say this slip of paper fell through… a seam, which appeared above your desk? LEHNER: You’ve seen the footage uploaded to the Internet. A blue, glowing seam, like those created by the SEAM Drive. CLARK: That’s impossible. An object has never returned from parse travel. LEHNER: You saw the paper return, on the video, with your own two eyes. Someone’s trying to tell us something; look at the sheet of paper. It’s got instructions written on it, followed by parse coordinates. And it’s signed. CLARK: What does it say? LEHNER: ‘Reset button at X: 999, Y: 999, Z: 999. Sincerely, Mary Ashcraft.’ CLARK: Mr. Lehner, Mary Ashcraft is dead. LEHNER: Are you sure that Ashcraft is dead? Just like you’re sure that returning from parse travel is impossible? === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The New York Times’, AUGUST 2079] ...total collapse of government in most of Latin America, Cuba has declared martial law. The situation in the region has been exacerbated by the aftereffects of the earthquake that occurred earlier this month, causing estimates of over half a million fatalities. The United Nations Secretary General, Adone Dellucci, has withdrawn UN support from the area, citing more pressing conflicts in other parts of the world. ‘In the aftermath of the Russian annexation of Belarus and Ukraine, the UN cannot solely focus on one global region,’ Dellucci answered to reporters earlier this morning. Dellucci has faced criticism over his response to crises in Latin America… === [EXCERPT FROM STATEMENT PUBLISHED BY THE ‘United Nations General Assembly’, NOVEMBER 2079] Our world is failing. Global social, political, and economic processes are collapsing worldwide. Over the last eleven months, a quarter of the world’s population has died from starvation, violence, or natural disasters. Look up. The very stars themselves are going out. In spite of our situation, we have hope. A day ago, a team of international forensic scientists confirmed the authenticity of the note delivered by Mr. Gary Lehner, of the Goddard Space Flight Center. The handwriting on the note is Mary Ashcraft’s, developer of the SEAM Drive. We now know our preconceptions on returning from parse travel were incorrect. And if Ms. Ashcraft made a discovery that could salvage the human race - a ‘reset button’, in her own words - we cannot hesitate to follow in her footsteps. There are parse coordinates on the sheet of paper she sent to us. We must act immediately to travel to the location she indicated - a location that is hundreds, if not a thousand, parallel universes away. The UN General Assembly proposes immediately commencing the Wayfarer Initiative, a specialized team of individuals who will undertake travel to the coordinates described by Ms. Ashcraft. The Wayfarer Initiative should involve the construction of an experimental colony ship propelled by a SEAM Drive, suitable for travel between parallel universes. Funding for the Wayfarer Initiative should be pulled from member nations… === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ INTERVIEW, DECEMBER 2079] DELLUCCI: We’ve named the colony ship the Wayfarer. Alongside basic equipment, it will also carry colonization technology and a repository of human knowledge, should the Wayfarer Initiative find a parallel universe suitable for habitation. CLARK: How can you expect these men and women go out on what is basically a one way trip? DELLUCCI: Mr. Clark, today, my son and I watched as the Perseus constellation disappeared from the sky. We don’t have a choice. === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The Washington Post’, JANUARY 2080] ...sweeping protests over the United Nations’ decision to choose English as the main language of the Wayfarer Initiative. While justified by an anonymous source as ‘essential to maintain team synergy’, the decision has sparked massive backlash... === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The Diplomat, FEBRUARY 2080] ...civil war in China has left nearly two million people dead. Coupled with the destruction of Taiwan by a tsunami earlier this week, the Asian region looks to be on the brink of social collapse… === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The New York Times’, MARCH 2080] ...construction on the Wayfarer was delayed by massive crowds of protesters on the premises. The situation quickly devolved into violence, resulting in at least a hundred deaths… === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ INTERVIEW, APRIL 2080] CLARK: You’re saying that the Wayfarer is our only chance? DELLUCCI: I’m saying that the Wayfarer is the best chance we’ve got. === [EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN ‘The Washington Post’, MAY 2080] ...total collapse of most Western European governments, and martial law has been declared in the United States. To any objective observer, civilization has failed. === [AUDIO EXCERPT FROM ‘National Public Radio’ PROGRAM, JULY 2080] CLARK: It’s been only nine months from its founding, and the Wayfarer Initiative is already set to launch. I’m here at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, watching as the Wayfarer makes its final preparations. It’s night time, so the sky is an empty black. There are no more stars left to make light. The atmosphere here is frightened and hesitant. There are so many questions that remain unanswered. Why did the stars disappear? Why are the plants failing? Is parse travel even safe? Will the Wayfarer ever return? Can it save us? Amidst the uncertainty, the blue ion engines of the Wayfarer light up, and the ship ascends from its platform. For maximum efficiency, it will exit the Solar System’s magnetic field before engaging its SEAM Drive. The Wayfarer follows a slow ascent, gradually accelerating. From this distance, it’s almost mournful. The Wayfarer’s ion engines flare in intensity when it leaves the atmosphere. As it shines in an empty night at the end of the world, you can almost mistake the Wayfarer for a star. Reporting for the last time from the Kennedy Space Center here in Florida, I’m Flint Clark. You’re listening to NPR.” ========================================

You’re awakened by the buzzing of voices, coming from the holographic screen in front of you. Still groggy, you swipe at the screen to mute it. You must’ve fallen asleep soon after boarding the Wayfarer. Those preflight preparations took a lot out of you. In the light of your cabin, you squint at the screen. It looks like you accidentally pressed play on a playlist of historical news clippings in your sleep. You tap at the screen to close the tab. You don’t need a refresher in what’s happened to Earth in the last seven years; you lived through it, and that’s bad enough. The ambient humming of the Wayfarer’s engines nearly put you back to sleep, but you force yourself to stand up and take a look around. You’re in your standard cabin, given to every Wayfarer Initiative operator: gray metal walls, beige carpet, an overhead light, a sliding keycard door set into the back wall, and one small window beside it. A cryosleep bed is set next to the left wall from the door; it looks like the bed can also be used for regular sleep. Opposite the bed is a door you assume leads into your personal bathroom. There’s a desk with a chair and holographic terminal set against the front wall. You wince at the drool stain spread across it. That’s where you must’ve fallen asleep. Stepping toward the desk, you pick up a holographic datapad from where it’s fallen on the floor. You read its title: “Preflight Information and Forms”. Whoops. You probably should’ve filled this out earlier. Still, you tap at the screen to read through it. === “[ORIENTATION LETTER] Congratulations! As one of the top military, medical, or scientific minds in the world, you have been approved to join the crew of the Wayfarer, the greatest scientific endeavor ever undertaken. While the mission will be dangerous, it is for the good of all humanity. The destination of the Wayfarer has already been set: parse coordinates X: 999, Y: 999, Z: 999, the apparent location of Mary Ashcraft’s ‘reset button’. However, because of the length of the journey, several stops in different parallel universes will have to be made to resupply the Wayfarer with necessary resources, such as fuel or food. The ship’s AI will automatically plan these stops, based upon sensor information, to maximize the safety of the crew. Be wary: while these parallel universes will be safe most of the time, it is likely that unforeseen dangers will present themselves. Regardless, these stops present incredible chances to gather scientific information. Initial parse travels by the SEAM Drive Project have discovered a vast array of incredibly varied universes, ranging from abandoned cityscapes to lush alien jungles. Every universe you stop in will likely be unique. If the chance to begin a safe colony presents itself, do not hesitate to take it. Should Earth fail, you are the last remnant of mankind. The Wayfarer Initiative thanks you for joining this undertaking, and acknowledges the sacrifices you have made. It is not an easy choice to begin a journey knowing you likely will not come back, but....” === You snort and impatiently swipe at the datapad. You received that orientation the first day you signed up. === “[SHIP LAYOUT] GENERAL INFORMATION The Wayfarer is a multipurpose combat and colony ship, designed for extended parse travel. It measures 180 meters in length and 50 meters at its widest. Most of the ship’s processes are controlled by its Sentient Administrative Matrix (SAM), an onboard AI. An elevator system is located in the middle of the ship for travel between decks. Because of the size of the Wayfarer, autonomous vehicles must be utilized when disembarking in-atmosphere. COMBAT INFORMATION Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR) Accelerators: Weaponized, self-sustaining nuclear reactors which fire rapid pulses of high energy photons for medium to short range engagements. Three massive LFTR Accelerators are mounted along each side of the ship. Short recharge period. Intelligent Self-Replicating Armor (ISRA) Plating: Carbon nanotube sheets with thousands of self-replicating repair nanobots attached to each sheet. Damage to armor is slowly fixed automatically over time by the nanobots, which enter the hull during parse travel. ISRA Plating covers the ship’s entire superstructure. AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES CDS-4 Pelicans: Vertical take-off and landing combat dropships powered by ion jet propulsion systems. Each Pelican is armed with two front facing miniature LFTR Accelerators and is covered in full ISRA Plating. The Wayfarer holds two Pelicans, each capable of carrying sixteen operators. ATV-2 Wolverines: Enclosed all-terrain vehicles powered by miniature ion engines. Each Wolverine is armed with a miniature auto targeting LFTR Accelerator and is covered in full ISRA Plating. The Wayfarer holds three Wolverines, each capable of carrying eight operators. Wolverines are dropped by a suspension system from the Wayfarer. LEVEL ONE (UPPER) Automated Bridge: Contains ship navigation, communication, and sensor equipment. Automatically controlled by SAM. Combat Control Center: Directs weapons systems during combat. Can be both automatically and manually controlled. LEVEL TWO Crew deck: Contains all individual crew cabins, as well as a central social area with a large solid-hologram capable projector for entertainment purposes. LEVEL THREE Colony Repository: Contains colony creation equipment, as well as a databank containing scientific and cultural data records. Utilized for settlement establishment. Life Support: Contains life support equipment and a hydroponics system for crop growing. Garden capacity is enough to comfortably feed the entire crew. Kitchen and Dining Area: Full kitchen and connected dining area for use during meals. Medical Bay: Contains medical equipment, including an sterile operating theater, in case of injury. LEVEL FOUR Depot: Storage area for auxiliary materials, as well as a small fabrication center for the construction and repair of items. Armory: Weapons and equipment are acquired here. Hangar: Holds and deploys the Pelican and Wolverine autonomous vehicles used to disembark the Wayfarer. Negative pressure and decontamination systems are always in effect. LEVEL FIVE (LOWER) SEAM Drive: Opens seams to facilitate travel between universes. Actively shielded and restricted from access, as the drive releases lethal levels of gamma radiation when in operation. Ion Core: Provides power to all ship systems and general energy for propulsion. Safe to enter.” ===

Skimming through the ship information, you have to let out a whistle at what the Wayfarer has installed. Most of the tech is top of the line, or experimental - it must’ve cost the Wayfarer Initiative a pretty penny. You swipe at the datapad. === “[OPERATOR CLASSES] GENERAL INFORMATION While all Wayfarer Initiative operators have basic combat, first aid, and technical knowledge, each operator is expected to specialize in a specific class based upon personal background and experience. Each class is assigned specific tasks while embarked and disembarked, as well as special equipment to fill those tasks. GENERAL TECHNOLOGY Omnisuits: All Wayfarer Initiative operators are assigned their own personal omnisuit. Omnisuits are built upon adaptable nanotechnology, and when activated, expand from a small device worn on the wrist to cover the entire body. While only expanded omnisuits can provide total combat and hazard protection, suits in their portable form still retain warfare assistance, navigation, and communications capabilities. While omnisuits are highly durable, they are not self-regenerating, and must be brought back to the Wayfarer for repair. ASSAULT CLASS: OVERVIEW While embarked, an Assault-class operator fills menial ship roles, such as cooking, cleaning, or hauling. However, Assault-class operators are essential when disembarked, playing specialized offensive combat roles with heavy weaponry. Generally, Assault-class operators have military backgrounds. ASSAULT CLASS: TECHNOLOGY LR-5 Lancers: Long-range heavy sniper rifles, Lancers utilize delayed miniature LFTR Accelerators to fire extremely high energy photon bolts at a slow, semiautomatic rate of fire. Lancers never run out of ammunition, but do require a cooldown period between each shot to expel heat. HS-1 Rippers: Medium-range heavy assault rifles, Rippers utilize supercharged miniature LFTR Accelerators to fire streams of photons at an extremely high, full automatic rate of fire. Rippers will never run out of ammunition, but do require periodic pauses every few hundred shots to expel heat. Multi-Purpose (MP) Grenades: MP grenades are small, usually hand thrown explosives that can be programmed to serve a variety of purposes. Each MP grenade has an incendiary, cryogenic, concussive, and high explosive setting. BIOTECH CLASS: OVERVIEW While embarked, a Biotech-class operator plays the important role of looking after the crew’s physical and psychological well being. Biotech-class operators fill similar responsibilities when disembarked, supporting other operators by treating injuries and boosting combat capabilities. Generally, Biotech-class operators have medical backgrounds. BIOTECH CLASS: TECHNOLOGY SM-6 Strikers: Medium-range submachine guns, Strikers utilize controlled miniature LFTR Accelerators to fire pulses of photons in a moderate energy burst fire. Strikers never run out of ammunition, but do require periodic pauses every few bursts to expel heat. Comprehensive Field Medical Devices (Medivices): Medivices are back-portable, modular equipment packs intended to provide all the tools necessary for medical care during high-stress scenarios. Along with detachable vitals monitoring equipment, every Medivice includes a self-contained materials fabricator for the construction of medically necessary tools and compounds. Bio-Accelerators: Bio-Accelerators are small, deployable units that can be utilized to boost specific traits of organisms in a two meter diameter area of effect. By releasing different airborne compounds, each Bio-Accelerator can temporarily improve either operator nightvision, strength, or damage resistance. ENGINEER CLASS: OVERVIEW While embarked, an Engineer-class operator fills roles in ship maintenance and repair, and is responsible for a variety of specialized scientific and technical tasks on the Wayfarer. When disembarked, Engineer-class operators play defensive and reconnaissance roles. Generally, Engineer-class operators have scientific backgrounds. ENGINEER CLASS: TECHNOLOGY CQ-8 Maimers: Short-range shotguns, Maimers utilize multiple small LFTR Accelerators to fire an extremely high energy spread of inaccurate photons at a slow, semiautomatic rate of fire. Maimers never run out of ammunition, but do require a cooldown period between each shot to expel heat. Adaptive Environment Projectors (AEPs): AEPs are back-portable devices specifically designed to project solid-holograms for combat and mobility purposes. Powered by miniature ion engines, AEPs produce holograms that are durable enough to be used as cover or to overcome obstacles. The functional range of an AEP is a one meter radius around the user. UAD-9 Raptors: Raptors are tiny, disk sized unmanned aerial drones designed specifically for reconnaissance purposes. While Raptors have no combat capabilities, they are highly mobile and have a virtually unlimited operational distance.” === You’re about to swipe at the datapad again when you hear a beep behind you. Spinning around, you come face to face with a floating, translucent white dodecahedron. “I’m sorry,” the dodecahedron hums in a robotic murmur. “I did not mean to startle you.” “You must be SAM,” you reply, giving the dodecahedron a once over. “That is correct. I am currently performing a maintenance check before the ship engages its SEAM Drive for the first time.” SAM floats toward your ceiling to continue his inspection. “Do you control… all of the ship?” you ask warily, watching as SAM buzzes around your room. It pauses in response to your question. “Yes. All Wayfarer systems are in some way controlled by my matrix. Additionally, I play a direct role in deciding each stop of the Wayfarer, based upon my sensor analysis of which parallel universes are the safest.” “But the eventual destination is always parse coordinates X: 999, Y: 999, Z: 999,” you reply. “Yes. Barring temporary stops where you, the operators, will momentarily disembark to replenish the Wayfarer’s fuel and food reserves, as well as a location for a colony should you choose to establish one, X: 999, Y: 999, Z: 999 is the Wayfarer’s eventual destination.” SAM lowers to meet you at eye level, beeps “Finish your preflight datapad”, then hums away. You roll your eyes, then swipe at the datapad. === “[OPERATOR INFORMATION FORM] Name: Age: Gender: Appearance: Personality: Biography: Operator Class: Personal Effects: Other: All sections are necessary. Please finish this form before boarding the Wayfarer to expedite recordkeeping.” ===

You fill out the form, mentally chastising yourself when you read the form’s last line. Not soon after you press data submit, SAM’s voice echoes through the ship’s intercom. “Time until SEAM Drive activation: one day.” As the intercom fades away, you glance at your cryosleep bed. You might as well catch some rest while you still have the chance - who knows what the week will bring? Throwing your datapad back onto the desk, you climb into bed. You’re out before your head even touches the pillow. ======================================== [OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION] GENERAL SYNOPSIS You’re a member of the crew of the Wayfarer, a ship designed to jump through universes. Your goal is to reach the universe marked with the coordinates X: 999, Y: 999, Z: 999. Before that point, you’ll have to pass - and fight - through various other realities. I’ll indicate progress by increasing the coordinates attributed to each universe you pass through. Every stop will be short, different, and generally expand the plot. I’m intending this roleplay to be heavily action and exploration based, and decently focused around a story. Still, it should be pretty open-ended; if you don’t break the rules or the game, I’ll allow most things. Feel free to explore the Wayfarer and each universe as long as you like (that is, if the other roleplayers don’t yell at you). RULES AND GUIDELINES 1. No godmodding, metagaming, et cetera. 2. Follow the Roblox rules - don’t be grossly inappropriate. 3. Please, be literate, detailed, and use standard grammar conventions. 4. Don’t spam the roleplay; PM me if you have any questions. 5. Write the first two letters of your Roblox username in the “Other” portion of your character sheet. 6. Your character cannot be one of the ones already mentioned by name above. Those are NPCs, which I control. 7. Your character should fit the class you choose for them. 8. Your character is one of the best in their respective field; remember that when writing their character sheet. Simultaneously, keep in mind that your character is only human. 9. Your character and their interactions must make sense, even if the universe you’re currently in doesn’t. Think of yourself as an outside observer: you still follow the laws of normal reality in other universes. If that makes your character go insane story-wise, though, that’s fine. 10. If you take an action that will have a significant impact, let me write out the outcome. This goes for all combat. I’m loosely deciding consequences based on d20 rolls.
