Varcia, the skies were crying. Snowflakes—some as large as snowballs, others as small as snowdrops—all fell in unison from the clouded sky. The battlefield had been freezing cold for well over a year now, and while the fighting had remained constant then, it had pulled now to a stagnant halt. Either side lacked room for breath. Both Vaktovian and CSP men had fallen, whether in littered particles along the hillsides, or swollen within their trenches; officers had suffered (amputated, killed, massacred). The end of the battles seemed close, but it was a commonly known truth that the war had to go on. It was an endurance war.
“Sir, the enemy hasn’t come up since last Sunday,” Tayseri Gorehowl pointed out to Colonel Mortem Interfectorem Sylaine. “They could be weakened.”
The colonel grumbled, a metallic hand feeling the trigger of the pistol mounted onto his belt. “Negative. If they were weak, why would they be baiting us? The CSP do not become weak, cadet. That is why they are such an enemy to the Empire. Because we do not weaken either.”
Tayseri chuckled. “Heh. But sir, should we lead an attack?”
“No.” Colonel Sylvaine said this firmly. “Look around you. This is trench warfare. They have machine guns, barbed wire, artillery. We cannot lead an assault, otherwise we would be killed where we ran, and scattered in remains over the battlefield. Who would win then, hm? No…we must wait. We must wait out the enemy if we want to be the victors of this conflict.”
“Yes, sir.”
The news of Colonel Sylvaine’s judgement spread quickly over the mangled trenches of the Varcian Brigade of the Vaktovian Empire. It wasn’t long before the word reached Vaktovia’s capital city of Vyyrahk, wherein Vaktovia’s elite generals met solemnly to discuss matters of state…
“We will hold our positions?” Supreme General Bektor reiterated in shock. “Hold…our…positions? But that would mean the warscore would go down! We cannot let Vaktovia lose this war, generals! What on earth is on your mind?”
“Well, my lord…” began General Hunter.
“It was a rhetorical question!” Bektor heaved a deep sigh. “Which one of you promoted Colonel Sylvaine! I demand to know! This is absolutely preposterous. What would the Emperor say if he knew… that’s it. We’ll have to call a draw.”
