I don't say that either but I don't class it on its own as a bad word should it be the place or describing a scene. It's like not a bad word but not really something you'd say in a formal conversation. |

"what the hell?" Has absolutely nothing to do with a place or religion. It comes from Ireland, where "Hella or Hell" meant potatoe. They would try and find the potatoe and ask where it was by saying something like, "Where the hell?" which later became a meaning for "I don't know." So, when people say, "What the hell?" They are really saying, "What just happened? I don't know." |
