The Berlin Wall was still up at the time the Wall was released, and was causing almost as big of a controversy as it was about 10 years later when it finally came down. However, the Wall isn't about the Berlin Wall. You'd have to wait for the Division Bell to get that stuff.
What the Wall *is* about, though, is this rockstar who blames everyone else for his despair and problems -- most specifically his mother, the British Royal Army(I think that's what it's called), his teacher, and his spouse -- and isolating himself from the world because he really only believes in himself. He starts to hate people, becoming almost Fascist, and showcasing his hatred/flawed ideas at his concerts while stoned on some drug. But as we all know, his despair was really caused by his own self-indulgence, and he later realized that -- but too late -- and decides to "tear down his wall". We aren't told what happens to him after that, though, and Roger Waters left the end up for speculation. But the whole concept was meant to applied to everyday life, and all of us can relate to it at some point and in some way. It's a universal message, really. |
