Infantry consists of a variety of troops. Archers, swordsmen, polewielders (Spears), etc.

Naturally, merchants will go in an out of both nations if two nations are not at war. A trade route is meant to get a resource they have a surplus of and that you have little of.
You have a lot of ore from the mountains, but not enough wood to cut. So you can attempt to trade like that for example.
