Ok guys I couldn't find this on the internet and I know some of my fellow scripters here are into robotics. So I was wandering if there is any way to tap into an electrical fence on a farm to harvest the pulses it sends. I have a shop up on our hill on our farm and obviosuly there is no electrical sources up on the hill other than the fence. So I am wanting to take some power from my father and run it to my little house then reroute some of it back down the fence. Since there is 1000-5000 volts running through it every second. |

It's probably DC current (otherwise it would be lethal). . .
I don't think there's a safe way to tap it, because most wires can't hold that much electricity. |

Probably very high voltage but not that many amps of power. |

Well, the fence works on the basis that the electricity will be grounded once it's touched. So, if you could get it to flow through something and then into the ground, you could supply power to something else.
Fence > Device > Ground |

Alright here, take some electrical diodes, and then push them into a potato! BAM! .6V of electricity. No really though, you would be better off taking a steam turbine, and boiling a pot of water over it rather than trying to tap a DC fence. Though, you might be able to with a steel cable and a jury rigged converter... |

Oh, and don't forget your $5000 pair of insulated gloves! |

What I said. |

You could probably set up a small water turbine running in a little stream or something on the property? Dunno. |

I do have one question though. Why not just plug a cord into a power outlet instead of trying to sap power from your own electrical fence?(I would assume it's your own, as if you would refresh, stealing any object(including power) from another person can get a nice nice fine/jailtime given from your friend, the person you stole from.) |
|
|
Just get a extension cord. You know the industrial kind that are SUPER long.
You COULD even run it under ground
-ITS FREEEEEEEEEEEE |

@Owen: Actually you can. Use a transformer to knock it back down to 120V at higher current.
You mentioned that it pulses? That would be very bad to power anything unless you used som big, huge capacitors to condition it first. However, it would probably be easier (and safer) to find the source of the electric fence to plug into since it is already 120V AC (which can be rectified to DC). |
|

I would need a few miles of cords. Its a farm, not a backyard...
We placed a small house in the woods. I was gonnah tap into the fence... I guess I could sap some solar power up. |

Ya electric fences are low current... That way they just send a nasty shock and don't actually kill you. |

@Noyus: Yeah, but you are an imposter, I'm the master of fake troll accounts, thanks for stealing my account name 3: (that's the name I was gonna take, but you took it, so I had to settle with this). |
