I will have an entire summer to make a new RTS game in just 9 weeks.
I was thinking of making an outer space RTS. The objective of the game is to capture all planets. I will use the tried-and-true strategy of tanks/planes/soldiers, except they will all be types of ships, but with similar stats, like tank(slow, strong), plane(fast, medium health), etc. Money sources will be suns. Each sun(won't be to scale with real suns) will allow you to make one solar panel, which can go anywhere around it, if close enough. You will be able to make buildings anywhere that you have a close enough building, or a captured planet. You will not be able to capture a planet until ALL enemies nearby, even a lonely ship not attacking you, have been defeated.
The biggest problem I have with a space RTS, is the control. How will I make a person move units around in 3D space? I can have an arrow coming out of the camera, and you can scroll your mouse and choose how far the "selection" point is, but that may still be confusing.
Post solutions, and suggestions(buildings, units, objectives, rules, etc) |

Sounds cool.
A jet pack would be an easiest way to fly in a 3D space while also being cool at the same time.
Also a plane or spaceship could have the farest model lua.

Not talking about moving your screen, that will be easy. I'm asking HOW would you maneuver your units in space? If you click to tell a unit to go in a certain area, how does it know if you want it to go 30 studs away from you, or 3000 studs away? |

You could have astroids to click on |

No because that doesn't solve anything.
I'm talking about moving a unit to the exact place. What is the best way of doing this? Since when you click in space, supposedly your click location would be infinite, and there is no way of telling exactly where you wanted the unit to go.

You could just do it like Sins of a Solar empire where they are on a 2D mapkindof and 3D models..... If you get what I mean. |

My only suggestion at this time would be a scroll system with a maximum radius script to click. I.E. You select 30 studs on the scroll system and you click somewhere in space and the unit(s) go 30 studs and stop. Other options would included the different numbers like 5, 10, 20, 30, 50. You could even add a custom number like typing in the desired amount.

how about you have a brick as long as the map but its invisable and collidable. |

This is my suggestion. You know with guns how you can shoot them in the sky and stuff. You could do the same thing with the tool. Just they don't shoot. It will assume the DIRECTION you mouse is pointing. So it will have to click and hold the mouse to make the units go to a spot you want.. This is only a solution. I don't know if it will work great, but oh well. First thing I could think of.

do it how u do in the conquerors u made the space ships nad planes do the same thing your trying to figure out... they are floating but they move on your command to where you click just use the same concept get some ships from your home planet and then they spawn floating in the air and you can move all units witha mouse click |
|

ryry99, from what I understand from your solution, wouldn't it cause a problem with multitasking when your attacking? Like if you try to flank someone. |

Killers idea of having a brick colideble and invisible. Sounds the best. I would like to see how this game turns out. I find it something hard to think of how to do it.
Units: Construction Ship= Like a Space Station where you can build around
Light Space Ship= Light Plane
Heavy Space Ship= Heavy Plane
Shooter= Like a Light Tank
Heavy Shooter= Heavy Tank
Buildings: Well the Solar Panels
Anti-Air Turret
Type of shield? ( Has so much health kinda like walls)
Ship Hanger
Planet Sensors? ( When an enemy ship comes by there will be a thing that pops up on your screen telling you someones nearby.)
Ideas:
I think added like land with your plant to allow others to use like a ship that carry's men to attack too would be good.
Planet seeking Missiles?
Instead of Solar Panels Resource Mines?
Hope this helps! Message me if you want anymore, Big fan of the Conquers I hope this happens would be really cool to play.

Ok so, just make little stars for people to click on so that's where they move. Great idea right? |

Maybe teleporters....in each planet there will be teleporters. If you want to gp to a different planet use a teleporter. But then the problem is where the teleporter transports to. You could solve that using a GUI allowing you to select a planet. |
|
|
hat helps you could make it when you go in the planets that your can't see any thing exsept inside it.
the planes would be level so that you could easily move the units to other areas

I Agree with the 2 comment before my comment. |

One idea that could work is that if you could make a fake humanoid of the player and it would be controlled by that humanoid you would move it as if it was a hopperbin to the place you wish to move your ,but the player would move it by a maximum range from line of course and it would be marked by a red dot that only the player can see. Each 10 studs would be marked, but on the line every 3 studs would be marked. the only difference is that 3 studs are marked by a dot on the line and every 10 studs by a dot and the actuall word. The player would simply have a camera that moves on top of the line as soon as it clicks in that direction with the tool. To reduce clash of scripts I would have it so that the player has a GUI that the controller can use to choose where the unit goes (it will be the ctrl. units, but Gui.)

Control mechanism-
move around like in conquerors, but height levels - click up level to move your spaceships up higher, and click down level to go lower, there would be example 10 heights
Pheonix
HIIGGGHHHH health
average attack
slow speed
desc: Space Tank
Jaguar Fighter
Low health
fast attack
fast speed
average damage
Desc: Fast fighter, best at destroy economics
Buoyancy Bomber
Slow unit
average hp
Slow-ish attack speed
Does area damage
High-ish damage
Desc: Launches bombs in a straight line
Rocket Rider
average speed
average attack speed
low damage
average hp
Desc: Basic Space Infantry.
Light Barbarian Fighter
average speed
average hp
average attack speed
low damage
Desc: Light Space Infantry
Heavy Barbarian Fighter
average speed
high-ish hp
average attack speed
high-ish damage
You like or no? |

Can no one here understand his question?
The answer depends on if you want 3d movement or 2d movement.
If you want 2d movement, just have the unit move to the X position that the player clicks and the Z position, then set the Y to a standard one. For example:
Player clicks on (56,124,89)
You set default Y to 25
Unit moves to (56,25,89)
If it is 3d movement, add a hot key for the player to move up/down. |
