I think you mean dialect. And I don't know, I like the language and its dialects, but I don't know any of it. Well, expect like a few words.

well, now mardarin is considered as 'chinese'. since a long time ago, china gotta discuss which should be their local dialect(since there were a lot). it was like a vote. and at last mardarin was voted to be the local dialect. cantonese almost catched up the voted number of mardarin. people nowadays thinking that they are different languages, but they are dialects. i dont really 100% guarantee that the information is true or not. but the truth is quite similar to this. i am hk people and i speak cantonese. mardarin is like a piece of *censored*.

@swwii: Could you tell us more about the differences between Mandarin and Cantonese? And why do you hate/dislike it?

Mandarin is more common, and more widely spoken. If you learn it, then I can help you with work, since I'm learning it too :D

Another fact is, people in China speak Mardarin with different accents. Since there are a lot of dialect, people may sometimes mix some dialects into Mardarin which makes it confusing to other people who are not fluent in Mardarin(including me). One of my friend visited Beijing and when he was taking a taxi, he did not know what is the driver saying. After a few researches he finally know that the driver was saying Mardarin with Hakka dialect and Hakka accents. Actually in my opinion, Cantonese is better. When I was small, teachers educate us with Cantonese and Mardarin. Til now, I still can't even speak a complete sentence in Mardarin. It is soooooooooooo freakin difficult to me and most of my classmates in my class. I just hate it with some ridiculous reasons : Hard to learn and confusing to me, LoL.

I see that Cantonese also has a lot more tones (6/9) and that some characters are written the same way as in Mandarin, but pronounced the same wich wakes up a misunderstanding. (I googled "Cantonese vs Mandarin" and hit the first result)
