Anymore, punk is just a label given by record companies. Actual punk is music that is socially and politically active. Rise Against has a style sometimes labeled as punk, but they are not.
Despite being a relatively popular band, Rise Against's music remains socially and politically aware, which is one is the major characteristics of punk rock.

1. Do the topics of choice include: SUICIDE, BREAKUP, OVERDOSE, OR IS IT JUST INTIMATE IN GENERAL?
2. Are the vocals SAD, WHINY, BROODING, OR MONOTONOUS?
3. Is it PUNK, POST-HARDCORE, OR SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES?
