Let's just face it; overrated rock bands suck. While they may start out good, eventually money and the media trample the band until they are no more. Performing at out of genre events, releasing stale songs and pretty much bashing their original genre really does annoy all who listen to them. Today we'll be counting down the top ten overrated rock bands. That being said, grab yourself a nice heaping basket of hater-tots and lets get started! Number Ten-Green Day: Number ten here is pretty obvious. At least to some people. Green Day got their mainstream start in the 90's after releasing their first hit "When I Come Around" off of their album "Dookie". After this, they were instantly launched into pop culture. Green Day reached peak popularity in 2004 upon the release of their most overrated album "American Idiot". Despite every album after this was critically panned, somehow people still seem to love this band. Number Nine-Nickelback: Let's just face it, this one is guaranteed. Mostly known for their work in the early 2000's, Nickelback pretty much took grunge... and ruined it. When Kurt Cobain comitted suicide, everyone assumed grunge was dead. At least, until grunge was revived as post-grunge. Since then, Nickelback began releasing unorginal songs like "How U Remind Me" and "Rock Star" and was eventually rejected by the rock community. Sadly enough, this wasn't enough to kill their spirit (if they had any). Number Eight-Imagine Dragons: Probably a newer adition to this list, Imagine Dragons isn't short of the spotlight themselves. Known for being apart of the 'new wave' of alternative, Imagine Dragons reached instant stardom after the release of "Radioactive". Since then, Imagine Dragons hace received a ton of pop and rock radioplay. Despite the fact their only famous for their singles, Imagine Dragons still continue to release albums. Number Seven-The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Back when alternative was young, you didn't have that many options. Mostly known for their 2005 album "Stadium Arcadium" RHCP was instantly thrown into the spotlight. RHCP is pretty much the definition of generic. Light riffs and songs usually about nothing certainly makes them perfect for pop radio. Although they rarely release abums, people still treat them like it's the first time listening to them. Number Six-Bullet For My Valentine: The term "fan girls" always applies to this band. Mostly known for being a regular on the infamous Vans Warped Tour, BFMV has been a staple in "goth" culture. BFMV is usually the band kids nowadays turn to when they want attention. With stereotypical dark lyrics, hard rock sound and stupid outfits, it's hard to believe anyone would honestly give a damn about them. Despite the complete lack of airplay they receive, people somehow find ways to listen and "appreciate" their music. Number Five-Marilyn Manson: Now that we've reached the half-way point for our list, it's time to tear into number five. Mostly known for his covers of pop songs, Manson has gotten attention he really doesn't deserve. With songs honestly about nothing at all, easy guitar riffs and outfits he finds in the Hot Topic dumpster, people somehow find a way to like Manson. Even whenever he gets sued once a year! That being said, 5 is a decent mediator. Number Four-Avenged Sevenfold: Mostly known as a "cult" favorite before 2013, Sevenfold started out as a metalcore band. Their mainly known for stealing guitar riffs from Pantera and Metallica alike. It seems these guys are more fanboy than band at times. No one really payed much attention to this band until their single "Hail To The King" got instant airplay. Since then, they've pretty much been selling out arenas and parks. Though, stealing guitar riffs and making a handful of successful singles doesn't make you metal. Number Three-Fall Out Boy: And to think around 4 years ago they were on hiatus. Arguably more pop than punk, F.O.B was pretty much the stereotypical pop-punk band for as long as they began. Starting on the warped tour, touring with Paramore and only making songs that had a nice ring to it. When they finally came to their senses they retired. Then four years later they come back with a single that somehow can't escape the radio. Nowadays they're selling out festivals all over the country. All I gotta say is just transfer to pop-rock already. Number Two-Aerosmith: Seriously. This one doesn't really need a description. Honorable Mentions: Linkin Park Three Days Grace Black Veil Brides Of Mice & Men Motorhead Rush My Chemical Romance 30 Seconds To Mars Guns 'N Roses Number One-Nirvana: Probably the only thing anyone remembers about the 90's (besides flannel hunting shirts) is Nirvana. Known for every song off of their album "Nevermind", Nirvana was an instant success. Their number one hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" broke grunge music into pop radio stations as well as rock. This in turn made them the one band everyone was listening too. Sadly enough, the constant attention Nirvana received weighed heavily on Kurt Cobain's mental disorders (and substance abuse) and heavily influenced his suicide. Nirvana also would ponder on why "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was so popular. In conclusion, if the band knows they're overrated, they are. Like the list? Hate the list? Flame.

I am pretty sure when you see the word "overrated" that pretty much means "popular but doesn't deserve to be".

Come on Raymond, I bet even you don't think these bands should be on an overrated list. You are just following the crowd. I certainly disagree with these bands being on the list: Nickelback. Btch please, it's the haters like you who are making them popular and overrated. Imagine Dragons. Their music is good. The only problem you said with them is that they are 'only famous for their singles' which okay, maybe so, but you could say that about a whole ton of bands and solo artists. Even your favourites are probably 'only famous for their singles' too. And for the Honourable Mentions list, can you provide an explanation for why those bands are on that list?

Nickelback may be "hated", but seriously. Please explain why their concerts sell out everywhere they go? If no one liked them they wouldn't be selling out arenas or parks. Imagine Dragons is pretty overrated. How many times do we have to hear "Radioactive" before we figure out it's by them? I'm pretty sure we can fairly agree Linkin Park is a tad bit overrated. They're my second favorite band and I even know they're overrated. Guns 'n Roses too is overrated. It's because of the fact they're overrated that Axl Rose fired every original member from the band. Don't even get me started on My Chemical Romance. Then we have 30 Seconds To Mars. They only wrote one hit song. The rest of their work is forgotten. Three Days Grace, too, needs no explanation. Granted, I like them a lot, but they have a tendency to be overworked. Black Veil Brides are pretty much the apitamy of overrated when it comes to the warped tour. They dress like Kiss but sound like Soundgarden. Of Mice & Men have become the flagship for the metalcore genre as of late. Their work is okay but it's not the best. Plus they tour with out of genre bands. I mean seriously; Linkin Park, Rise Against and Of Mice & Men. It's more of like a game of "guess which band doesn't belong" rather than "hardcore concert tour". Then we have Rush which is blatantly obvious. They're just as over played as Steve Miller at this point. When it comes to Motorhead, the fact is they just don't know when to let it die. They've been touring forever despite the fact they're just as irrelevant as an Adam Sandler movie at this point. When was the last time they even released a decent album? They act like a bunch of 70 year old try-hards who are struggling to find a place in society.

What you said about Motorhead was stupid. You think because there old they shouldn't tour etc. loads of old bands tour because a lot of people think there still good (which they are)you talk so much garbage it's really amusing to read.

how are OM&M overrated? they're only popular in the metalcore scene if you really needed a core band, BMTH and ADTR are way better choices "disrespect your surroundings."

I am pretty sure ADTR isn't metalcore but I see your point. I never said OMAM were bad, I stated they are overrated. They get a ton of media attention and are pretty much the only metalcore band everyone knows about. Motorhead is overrated simply because people associate them as "the first" heavy metal band or because of their song "Ace Of Spades". They get all of this hype but you can't understand a word that comes out of Lemmy's mouth.

@raymond OM&M don't get media attention tho maybe a tiny bit, but they aren't a mainstream band yet "this is your last judgement, time to pay the final price."

I just realised you never actually said why Nirvana are over rated, all you said was they got popular off a song (which they didn't even want to be popular) and that it influenced on Kurts suicide. Why exactly are they overrated?
RaymondReddington
#160728887Wednesday, April 22, 2015 11:33 PM GMT

Nirvana is overrated simply because they are over-played and over-hyped. Their songs, as described by the band, are pop songs with heavy riffs. Everyone says "Kurt is such a visionary" or "Nirvana is so badass" when they can't even state what their songs are about. Why the hell do you think they wrote "In Bloom"? Since this obviously will not appease you, I'll break my claim down even further. They are overplayed because of how popular their songs are. A majority of the Nirvana songs you hear on the radio are from their album "Nevermind" which is pretty overrated in itself. The songs are no better than any other alternative album you'd hear in todays world. Somber tone and topics dealing with love and substance abuse is no different than any other Seether song. Over hyped is simple. As previously stated, everyone praises this dude way too much. "Kurt was such a rebel. He insulted MTV!" or "Nirvana symbolizes rock as a whole." Less we forget the infamous quote "If it's illegal to rock and roll then throw my ass in jail." How many times do you hear that quote? Plus the only reason Nirvana was famous was because they put more focus on their chorus and melody.

Earth, I think we can fairly agree OMAM gets a ton of media attention. Especially by Alternative Press. They're coming to my towns biggest concert Welcome To Rockville and they made statements to the news about how it's their first time playing in my town. Less we forget how much coverage they got at the Vans Warped Tour. That tour pretty much revolved around them. I still think Motionless In White is better than OMAM when it comes down to it, but I do like OMAM. Their song "Second & Serbing" is a very thankful song. I just don't think they deserve to be the flagship of the metalcore genre. I don't know why you're worrying about them despite the fact they were in the honorable mentions.

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved.
